The teachers return to school at the National Institute for the Visually Impaired on 10th February so, finally, the first shipment of spectacles and magnifiers is on its way to Bhutan!!

At last – the first delivery of spectacles, dome magnifiers and hand held, self illuminated magnifiers are *nearly* ready to be shipped to the National Institute for the Visually Impaired in Bhutan! We’re just waiting for some extra cases to arrive…

24 fitted prescription spectacles, 14 magnifiers, named hard cases, named soft cases and a trial set of magnifiers.

The end is nigh! Sort of.

Yes – it’s December. What a relief. It’s been a big year and my To Do list is finally shrinking. I’ve finished all the workshops and training programs for 2012 so I’ve only got policies and plans left to complete, oh – and I need to learn how to use Slideshare and Prezi and I’ve got to get my head properly around e-learning and a few new regulatory frameworks – oh – and SA’s new work safe legislation… And then there’s that overdue book… So – you won’t be surprised to hear that I’m looking forward to some down time with family and friends to recharge the batteries to make sure that I’m ready for an equally big year in 2013! Which means any gossip you hear about me sitting around drinking white wine in the sun (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fCNvZqpa-7Q) – is probably true. Between 21st December and 3rd January anyway. What a couple of months it’s been!

The Simpson Desert Bike Challenge (even with all the dramas we raised $36,000 for the RFDS), an exciting new bylaw project for Community Housing, updating policies for community centres down south, more strategic planning sessions than any reasonable person could poke a stick at, a new grandbaby nearly here, partnership evaluations in progress, a Snakes and Ladders game on the way for a team of Community Development Workers and organisation charts of every size shape and colour everywhere I look… it’s no wonder I need a Secretary!

Dr Paul Collier Memorial Gratitude Award

Kate was honoured to be presented in April with the 2011 Dr Paul Collier Memorial Gratitude Award by Dignity for Disability… and wishes everyone involved a happy and productive year consolidating their last year’s hard work. It’s not easy being a small organisation with big goals, but the slog of updating their constitution, finalising their new organisational structure, designing job descriptions and terms of reference and getting policies and fundraising underway is a job well done!

Thanks everyone for your very positive feedback about the website. We’ve fixed a few small glitches and I’m enjoying being able to refer people to it when they ask “so, Kate – what EXACTLY is it that you do?”.

After a few weeks of quiet time (perhaps more realistically described as ‘time away from work’), I’m back at the desk and looking forward to a new year and some exciting new projects. See you along the way.
